About “Everyone Taling Over Everyone Else”

“song title is definitely a tribute to Lemmy and I want everyone to know that. But that song is a very personal song to me; a lot of the songs are about different kinds of abuse from different perspectives. That’s a very central song to my experience of being in an abusive relationship when I was younger. Being very detached from it now, I wanted to talk about it in a very forward way, which was something I’d never done before. The main theme is not knowing that you’re in that type of relationship. We’ve heard lots of women say that before; not many men, but it does happen. So that’s what it’s about: realizing you’re in that situation, and wanting to get out of it, and once you are you look back and say, “Whoa, what was I doing in that for so long?” – Norma Jean.

Song Lyrics: Norma Jean – Everyone Taling Over Everyone Else

Sit and listen to the voices fade
Give them space to destroy it all
Fill the space with the lies you shed

Every sorrow, every misery
Can and will be brought to life
If you put it in a story or a lie
Every sentence that you recognize
Every word of every kind
But I was waking up
I am stronger now
Every influential interview
I was in between the lies
But I was waking up, I am stronger now

Sit and listen to the voices fade
Give them space to destroy it all

Every picture, every photograph
I was disappearing lines
But I was showing up in the center of life

Sit and listen to the voices fade
Sit and listen to the voices fade
Sit and listen to the voices fade

Every motion
Every point of view
I was always giving up
But I have woken up
Every time of day

Sit and listen to the voices fade
Sit and listen to the voices fade

Info

The song is taken from their new album “Polar Similar” out September 2016. It was recorded at Pachyderm Studio in Minessota (the same studio where Nirvana recorded In Utero). Frontman Cory Brandan explained that every morning they walked from the cabin to the backyard studio and turned on Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. The studio’s legendary acoustics meant that very little additional effects were needed.

Polar Similar’s themes revolve around abuse. Brandan says this album is his most unguarded.

“As a man, it wasn’t easy to face the reality of that abuse. Decades out of that relationship, I think it’s important to reach out to listeners who feel like I did then, who feel alone or different — like this has only happened to them — because the facts are one in three women and one in four men will find themselves in abusive relationships in their lives…It’s not just physical abuse either — physical abuse is the product of an already abusive relationship. The record deals with all this in emotional detail.” – Brandan
